The parameters on the Horse tab allow you to restrict selections to horses that meet the values you specify in the parameters you choose to use.
For example you can include or exclude horses of a certain age or range of ages; horses carrying a weight range that you specify; horses returning from a Spell or have had a specified number of runs since a spell, just to name a few.
You can even specify the colour of the horse, and we know how important that is for finding winners.
The Horse parameters relate to the details of the horses in the race being analysed, not like the parameters on the Form tab, which relate to prior runs.
Please note that depending on the Data Options you have subscribed to, all of the parameters listed below may not appear on your Horse tab.
Age |
Age of horse |
Barrier |
Barrier position |
Black Book Horse |
Restrict selections to horses in your Black Book |
Bog Factor |
The Bog factor bonus or penalty is derived from horse’s performance statistics on Slow and Heavy tracks (range: -9.0kg to +6.0kg). Include or exclude a single value or a range of values, for example 'Exclude>Min -9.0 Max -6.0' |
Break Count |
Number of runs since a Break, which is 42 to 55 days break from racing |

FinPos |
Finishing position in the race being analysed.
As the FinPos is known only after the race has been run, this parameter can be used only with analysing historical data; and obviously not for isolating selections in today’s races |
Gear Changes |
Refers to the change of gear that a horse will be wearing, eg blinkers, tongue tie, lugging bit, nose band etc. This parameter is quite tricky to use in the System Deveoper because of the increasing number of gear changes and their complexity of combinations. See Gear Changes |
Home Track |
Home track is where the horse is trained, however many are not trained at a race track so recent installations of GTX convert the places those horses are trained to the closest race track |
Jockey |
Select Jockey or Jockeys from a list |
Jockey Allowance |
Jockey allowance or range (from 0.5kg to 4.0kg) |
Jockey has placed on horse |
Jockey has previously placed on horse (within the 16 runs available) |
Jockey has ridden horse |
Jockey has previously ridden horse (within the 16 runs available) |
Jockey has won on horse |
Jockey has previously won on horse (within the 16 runs available) |
Jockey Penalty |
Jockey Penalty or range of Jockey penalties, for example ‘Include 0 to 2.5’. Penalties range from 0.0 for jockeys with good recent riding records to 5.0 for jockeys with poor recent riding records. Unknown jockeys (Dummy) are rated at 5.5 |
Kgs from topweight (Carried) |
Number of kilograms less than the topweight.
Say the topweight carries 59.0 kg; a horse carrying 54.0 kg is 5.0 kg from the topweight. This refers to weight actually carried by the horse, not the Handicap weight |
Kgs from topweight (Hcp) |
Number of kilograms less than the topweight.
Example: The topweight’s handicap weight is 59.5 kg; a horse with a 53.0 kg handicap weight is 6.5 kg from topweight |
Late Mail |
Including Late Mail would allow only those horses that had been tagged as Late Mail by Unitab’s free QRatings service |
Letup Count |
Number of runs since a Letup, which is 28 to 41 days break from racing |
Margin |
Margin from the winner in the race being analysed.
As the Margin is known only after the race has been run, this parameter can be used only with analysing historical data; and obviously not for isolating selections in today’s races |
Maxrate Formline |
Relates to the maximum Formline Weight Rating the horse has achieved in its last 16 starts. See Rating to Win View |
Maxrate Range |
Refers to the difference in Maxrate value from the top-ranked Maxrate horse. Entering Min 0 Max 3.0 would give you all horses with the same Maxrate value as the top-ranked Maxrate horse an all those within 3.0 kg of it.
For example, if the top-ranked Maxrate horse had a Maxrate value of 58.0 kg, the Min 0 Max 3.0 rule would allow only horses with 55.0 kg to 58.0 kg Maxrate value to pass the rule. See Rating to Win View |
Maxrate Rank |
Refers to a horse’s ranking by Maxrate Formline value – the horse with the highest value is Maxrate top-ranked. See Rating to Win View |
Mud Factor |
Bonus or penalty given to each horse according to career statistics on Dead and Slow track runs (range: -9.0kg to +6.0kg) |
Place Strike Rate |
As distinct from Career Place Strike Rate on the Rating tab, this relates to the number of places in a specified number of the horse’s previous runs. For example, you could specify that a horse must have had two or three places in its last five runs, or three places in its last three runs, etc |
Placed with a CVal difference |
Include or exclude horses that have placed in a race with a Class Value within your specified range of Class Value difference compared to the race being analysed. Example: If you entered ‘Include> Min -1.0 Max 1.0’ only horses that had previously placed in a race within 1.0 kg of ‘today’s’ race Class Value would pass the rule.
If you entered Min 2.0 Max 3.0, only horses that had previously placed in a race that was 2.0 kg to 3.0 kg higher than ‘today’s’ Race Class Value would pass |
Prizemoney (k$) |
Relates to a horse’s career earnings. Entering ‘Include>Min 200 Max 500’ would allow only those horses with career earnings between $200,000 and $500,000 |
QTAB Tips |
Include or exclude those horses tagged as Tips 1-4 by Unitab’s free QRatings service |
RTW Overlay (Max) |
The difference between the Maximum Formline rating the horse has achieved in its last 16 runs, and the rating it needs to win the race being analysed. If a horse has achieved a Max rating of 50.5 and it needs 45.0 to win, its RTW Overlay (Max) is 5.5. If a horse has a Max rating of 38.0 and needs 42.5 to win, its RTW Overlay (Max) is -4.5 |
RTW Overlay (Nett) |
The difference between a horse's Formline nett rating and the rating it needs to win, in the race being analysed. For example, if a horse has an RTW (Rating to Win) of 42.3 but its Formline rating is 33.4, it has an RTW Overlay (Nett) of -8.9. A horse with a Rating to Win of 45.0 and a Formline rating of 51.9 has an RTW Overlay (Nett) of 6.9. |

If you have createdHorse Performance (Style) Flags, you can use this parameter to include or exclude specified flags |
TAB number |
Include or exclude specified TAB, or Saddlecloth, numbers |
Trainer |
Trainer of horse – pick from a list |
User Flags |
If you have created User Horse Flags, you can use this parameter to include or exclude specified flags |
Weight Carried |
The weight actually carried by a horse, which is the Handicap weight plus or minus jockey allowance if applicable |
Weight Handicap |
The official Handicap weight allotted to the horse |
Weight Rank (Carried) |
Ranking of horses by weight actually carried. The horse or horses carrying the highest weight would be top ranked; the next lowest weight would be second-ranked, and so on.
Horses carrying the same weight share the ranking. For example if the top weight-ranked horse carried 57.0 kg and three horses carried 56.5 kg, those three would be second-ranked |
Weight Rank (Hcp) |
Ranking of horses by official Handicap Weight. The horse or horses with the highest handicap weight would be top ranked; the next lowest handicap weight would be second-ranked, and so on.
Horses with the same handicap weight share the ranking. For example if the top handicap weight-ranked horse was allotted 57.0 kg and three horses were allotted 56.5 kg, those three would be second-ranked |
Win Strike Rate |
As distinct from Career Win Strike Rate on the Rating tab, this relates to the number of wins in a specified number of the horse’s previous runs. For example, you could specify that a horse must have had one or two wins in its last five runs, or two wins in its last three runs, etc |
WOL (Carried) |
Weight over Limit (Carried). Specify the number of kilos more than the official Race Limit Weight that the horse is carrying.
Note that this relates to the weight actually carried by the horse, which is the Handicap Weight plus or minus the Jockey Allowance, if any. If the nominated race Weight Limit is 53.0 kg and a horse is carrying 56.0 kg, then its WOL (Carried) is 3.0 |
WOL (Hcp) |
Weight over Limit (Handicap). Specify the number of kilograms that the horse's Handicap weight is more than the official Race Limit Weight.
Note that this relates to the Handicap weight allotted to the horse, and ignores the Jockey Allowance, if any.
If the nominated race Weight Limit is 53.0 kg and the horse’s Handicap weight is 55.5 kg, then its WOL (Hcp) is 2.5 |
Won with CVal difference |
Include or exclude horses that have won a race with a Class Value within your specified range of Class Value difference compared to the race being analysed.
Example: If you entered ‘Include> Min -1.0 Max 1.0’ only horses that had previously won a race within 1.0 kg of ‘today’s’ race Class Value would pass the rule.
If you entered Min 2.0 Max 3.0, only horses that had previously won a race that was 2.0 kg to 3.0 kg higher than ‘today’s’ Race Class Value would pass |
